Dealing with Rejection

Rejection – no one like to face it or impose it on others but sometimes it’s necessary. As designers, we may have times when we have to say no to scrappers applying to our creative teams. I tend to agonize over this a little bit because I don’t want someone to think that my not selecting them means their pages are terrible or even poor quality. But sometimes, they just don’t fit what I’m looking for or are too close in style to something I already have and I have to say no. Here are some guidelines I try to follow when doing calls.

1. Acknowledge every applicant’s initial email. Thanks so much for applying for my creative team. I appreciate your interest in my work! I will be making my final team decisions on _______ and I will notify you via email at that time.
2. For those who are not selected, acknowledge and thank again and say something positive and encouraging. Thank you for applying to my team. I really enjoyed looking at your layouts. You are really good at ____________. I’m sorry to say that I have not selected you for my team at this time. I encourage you to keep scrapping and wish you all the best in your future endeavors!

In my opinion, adding the sentence about what they’re doing right shows that you are treating them as a real person who works hard to create their pages. I have received a handful of rejection letters that were clearly canned and had nothing positive or encouraging. Just a basic NOPE, don’t like what you’re doing. That stings – so I try not to do it to others!
