DESIGNER TIP
It sure is a busy time of the year! I know many of you have full time jobs and families outside your digital design life and it can get really crazy juggling everything. If there’s one thing I learned in juggling family, work, volunteering and just life is how important it is to have priorities. Without them, you may end up spinning your wheels or spending too much time on things that don’t matter. I know some people recommend sitting down and writing down all your goals and priorities but if you’re like me, I bet you really already know what’s important to you. The challenge can be lining up where you spend your time and energy with what you believe is important and has value. A simple mental step I am training myself to take is to just try and do a quick gut check – is this really important? I this really how I want to spend my time? I have found over the past couple of months that I had gotten into the habit of chasing after things that didn’t matter, while neglecting some things that really do matter. That left me feeling extra stressed, unfulfilled and unhappy. I have made some mental shifts as well and time & effort shifts and find myself much more at peace.
It’s a great time of the year to take stock of your priorities in your relationships, personal life and work life. I don’t advocate making a big list of resolutions that you will burn out on after 10 days. That’s disheartening. But maybe there is one word or idea that will resonate with a change you want to make. Have you ever seen http://myoneword.org/? I will be picking my word in the next week – think I know what it is, but I’m just going to linger in the process a little bit.
So, being the end of the year and looking at your life and design work, would you benefit from stocking up on a few CU items from the store? I have my eye on my bottom line for this year in preparation for tax season. I’ve paid my hosting and web fees in 2012 and grabbed the design tools I would be needing earlier this month. This is a great time to map out what you want to work on in the next three months. Don’t worry, you still have next week after the bulk of the celebrations have taken place.
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from our family and all the designers at CUDigitals!
